The curriculum of special education schools is tailored to support children with learning needs. Learn how it can benefit your child.

Types of curriculum

There are 2 types of curriculum that children with special needs can take:

  • National
  • Customised

National curriculum

Children with moderate to severe special needs can take the national curriculum if they have been assessed to have adequate:

  • Adaptive skills to learn in large group settings.
  • Cognitive skills to focus, reason and remember.

Those who meet these criteria can prepare for the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) at:

After successfully completing the PSLE, they can choose to study in a mainstream secondary school. The choice of secondary school will depend on your child’s PSLE score.

Some children’s needs may be best supported in one of the following designated secondary schools:

Hearing loss

  • Beatty Secondary School (signing approach)
  • Outram Secondary School (oral approach)
  • St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School (oral approach)

Visual impairment

  • Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School
  • Bedok South Secondary School
  • Dunearn Secondary School

At these mainstream schools, support includes:

  • Specialised personnel such as teachers trained in special needs and Allied Educators are available to help students integrate into the school environment.
  • Specialised support programmes catering to different levels and learning needs.
  • Barrier-free facilities to help children with physical impairments.
  • Educational support services to help children with visual impairment, hearing loss or physical impairment.
    • This includes assistive technology devices, for example, frequency modulation devices, Braille notebook computers and talking calculators.

Autism spectrum disorder

Students with autism spectrum disorder can choose to take the national secondary curriculum at Pathlight School.

Customised curriculum

Customised curriculum is offered in special education schools and provides a child-centered, holistic learning experience for children with special needs.

The curriculum is intended to equip them with essential knowledge and life skills through key learning areas in:

  • Academic skills.
  • Social-emotional skills.
  • Life skills.
  • Vocational skills.
  • The Arts.
  • Physical education and sports.
